In a world where liberals are trying their best to make equality a priority, house-elf slaves just wouldn't cut it. In the Wizarding World, Hermione seems the only one around that realises just how much of an issue it is to enslave and treat elves like vermin. So much so that she started up her own campaign called The Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare or S.P.E.W. She saw gross injustice in the treatment of house-elves in the Wizarding World and decided to set up the campaign to champion their rights. If house-elves were a real thing, then there would be an serious uprising of note. You can imagine a little revolutionary Dobby and his peers standing up against government big-shots with a massive sign going; "Hell no, we won't go!" You can bet S.P.E.W would be taken a lot more seriously in the real world.
