10 Times Porn Went Mainstream

It Saw. It Conquered. It Came.

In 2003, Variety ran The Porning Report, a blog covering “the porn industry’s move to the mainstream” that, somewhat suspiciously, was written by an online editor for Adult Video News. Lasting only a few months, it was abandoned in early 2004, but there was no real need for it in the first place. Porn was already part of popular culture.

From Marilyn Chambers to Sasha Grey, porn stars in mainstream movies are nothing new, but they are only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Performers with credits in hard-core have voiced cartoons and videogames, dated rock stars and appeared on Times Square billboards, their glamour and mystique influencing more orthodox performers.

In the video for her song Wrecking Ball, Miley Cyrus is little more than an MTV version of an adult movie star, licking a hammer in a suggestive manner before disrobing to sit astride a swinging wrecking ball. Throw in the number of porn starlets who’ve either appeared in music videos or launched their own music careers and one thing becomes clear: hard-core is an inescapable element of youth culture.

To follow, you will find 10 examples of when porn emerged from the darkness it supposedly resides in to take up residence in your local multiplex, Barnes And Noble or, failing that, your living room.
