4. The Roads Are Incredible
In the UK, roads between towns and cities are usually winding, unlit, narrow affairs that have to curve around numerous obstacles, greatly adding to the time required to reach destinations. In the USA, roads are normally straight as an arrow and feel as wide as the ocean, allowing traffic to cover enormous distances in surprisingly little time. When Brits drive on these massively broad expanses of tarmac, they instantly feel a rush of freedom. Not only is there little danger of scraping the kerb, it can be hard to even see the kerb when it's so many lanes away. Of course, Americans need these vast roads because there are relatively few buses and trains. Also, there are a lot of tolls to pay along the way, which somewhat takes the shine off the highway network. But, still, the roads are a truly wonderful sight to behold and, at the risk of quoting Steppenwolf, many a Brit has chosen to head out on the highway looking for adventure.
