4. No Fish And Chip Shops
Living in the USA, ex-pats don't have many strange, unpalatable foods to get accustomed to. It's not like living in the Far East, where a new arrival might have to develop a liking from scratch for raw fish and seaweed. So why do ex-pats living in the States talk so much about British food? Their favourite foods are only sparsely available and people always want what they can't have. And it's a shame for not only ex-pats but Americans too that many of these dishes are not more widely known in the USA. Consider the single most famous British food that's not widely served in the US: fish and chips. Admittedly patrons will certainly see the words "fish and chips" printed on some US menus. But if said patrons were then gutsy enough to actually order these dishes, what would be placed before them? Fish nuggets and french fries, that's what. Similarly, there are no outlets for meat pies, other than a handful of cajun butcher's shops in the South. Full English breakfasts and haggis are thin on the ground too. Americans haven't quite fallen in love with these quintessentially British foods yet but an ex-pat can hope it'll happen one day, right?
