October: A Monster Month For The British Broadband?

With greater competition in the market and the roll out of all-new technologies, Britain is now more connected than ever before €“ especially thanks to developments in recent weeks. Whether it€˜s super-fast home broadband services or the impending launch of the 4G mobile internet, it seems web options are getting better and better all the time. In October alone, there have been a number of developments that look set to drive the online capabilities of the UK further than they have ever been before €“ which is great news for home and business users. The North West received a fantastic boost when it was revealed that an apparently "forgotten€ network of fibre optic cables in Manchester, built to help with the city€™s successful Commonwealth Games in 2002, had been snapped up by a company called Gamma for £1.3m. The group revealed plans to revive this system of wires €“ which has been named The Loop €“ to create a 48-mile high speed broadband network serving homes and businesses across the region. Commenting on the news, Gamma chief executive Bob Falconer said the move would offer a significant amount of network capacity and coverage for Manchester and that in some cases this included areas currently without fibre optic capabilities. €œWe recognise that Manchester aspires to be the UK's tech city and needs the very best in connectivity to achieve this and we want to help the city realise this ambition,€ he added. But it€™s not just the North West that is set to benefit from the roll out of new technology designed to provide better web services for Britain. October also saw the start of new home broadband and 4G mobile network services from EE, the company formerly known as Everything Everywhere and incorporating Orange and T-Mobile. This is something the company€™s CEO Olaf Swantee states will be a big part of the UK€™s digital ambitions for the future.
€œThis is a significant milestone for the United Kingdom and for the people and businesses of our country who will now be able to enjoy the huge advantages of superfast 4G technology for the first time,€ he explained. €œWe are very proud to be pioneering, innovating and leading our industry in launching 4G for our nation through our new EE brand.€
Whether it is home or mobile technology, the broadband marketplace is looking more exciting than ever before and with so many gadgets now being released €“ from smartphones to tablets and more €“ it seems there is only likely to be more demand for this level of connectivity.
