Arsenal Transfers: 5 Areas Wenger Must Strengthen To Compete

3. Up Front

Though Arsenal have signed both Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski this summer to boost their attacking options, the very real possibility of losing Robin Van Persie before the August window closes will set the team back. Neither Giroud or Podolski are proven Premier League quantities, however, and are likely to take some time to adapt to the Premier League - though both are coming from leagues that have so far provided players who have taken to the English system well. We've already suggested ten possible replacements for Van Persie, including some with Premier League experience like Demba Ba and Clint Dempsey, and assuming the Dutchman does leave, looking at the options Wenger has beyond those two new talents the French manager could do worse than consider some of them. Fringe players like Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela, Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu-Young have so far failed to make enough of an impression at Arsenal, which leaves just Gervinho as a viable back-up option should Giroud or Podolski be unavailable, and his frustrating inability to produce a final product after making long runs last year was a sore point among Arsenal fans. With four competitions to compete for this year, Arsenal really need four top class strikers to push for the two or three starting positions, depending on which set-up Arsene Wenger goes with.
