Arsenal Transfers: 5 Areas Wenger Must Strengthen To Compete

5. Defensive Midfield

Most of the successful teams in England last season were built around a strong anchor in the defensive midfield position - Man City had Yaya Toure, Spurs had Scott Parker, Newcastle United had Cheick Tiote and Chelsea were badly hamstrung by the injury to Michael Essien and Liverpool disintegrated without the influence of Lucas. Arsenal had Alex Song last season, but his form wasn't quite what it was during the 2010/11 season - possibly thanks to the knee injury that saw him miss two months of that season - and back-up Emmanuel Frimpong's ruptured cruciate ligament injury might keep him out for some time (and his attitude leaves a lot to be desired). Arsene Wenger can also call upon Mikel Arteta in the position, but he was pushed into a more attacking role by David Moyes, and restraining his creativity in a deeper role would mean losing some of his spark. So Arsenal are short of at least one holding midfielder - a combative player in the mold of Chieck Tiote (who Arsene Wenger has supposedly expressed interest in before), who could break up play, but who would also have the necessary skills to pass his way out of trouble as well as offering valuable destructive play. That would allow for one or two more creative central midfielders, whether that's Ramsey, Wilshere or Arteta to push forward and link up with the attacking players, and that strong foundation would be valuable in either a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 set-up for that very reason. What do you think Arsenal Fans? Should Arsenal be looking to make acquisitions in the areas above? Share your thoughts in the comments thread below.
