After all it was Jones who was tasked with silencing Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo in the first leg of the Champions League game this week, and who gave the defence the added protection they needed. But will that success mean that Sir Alex might now see the former Blackburn stopper as a better option in defensive midfield than at the heart of the defence? He certainly has the credentials to slot into defensive midfield, and United have missed that extra foundation in games in the past two years, even despite their current position, but it remains to be seen whether Jones really possesses the footballing skills to play higher up the pitch.
