Premier League Review: 5 Talking Points From Manchester City and Chelsea

2. Di Matteo Must Learn From Time At West Brom

Whilst Chelsea€™s 6 minute win and 84 minute hold on may be a solid start to their Premier League campaign there were dangerous foreshadowings for the big spending European Champions which echoed Di Matteo€™s time at The Hawthorns. Whilst Chelsea, at times, were eye catching going forward with brilliance from Hazard and Mata, they were made to work hard by Wigan who exploited the fact the Chelsea attacking midfielders were unwilling to cover. The Chelsea left and right backs were often left handling two Wigan players who were able to cut in, cross, play freely; against Wigan this didn€™t turn out to be a huge problem, against better opposition this could prove their undoing. Similar issues were found with Di Matteo€™s West Bromwich Albion, who played freely and openly but lacked any defensive discipline and were then taken apart because of it; if Chelsea want to challenge they must find a defensive discipline or risk only going backwards.
