Back in the day, however, qualification for a European competition was much more difficult and for many teams, the ultimate achievement was the winning of the FA Cup. United have lifted the trophy eleven times in their history, with five of those successes coming during Sir Alex€™s reign. The last was back in 2004 whilst the first was in 1990, as mentioned in a previous entry. Sir Alex€™s 1994 and 1996 successes are notable for the fact that they were won in tandem with the Premier League title, an achievement known as €˜The Double€™. The 1994 triumph was particularly notable, as not only was it the first time Sir Alex had delivered more than one trophy in a single season, but because the club became only the sixth English team to achieve the feat (following Preston (1888/89), Aston Villa (1896/87), Tottenham (1960/61), Arsenal (1970/71 and Liverpool (1985/86). 1996€™s victory meant that the club became the first to achieve the feat twice, but is more fondly remembered for the fact that the team achieved redemption following their second place league finish (to Blackburn) and cup final defeat (to Everton) in the previous season.
