2. The Inaugural Premier League Title (1992/93)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ns3pBw5CB9Q English football was in something of a dire state at the start of the nineties. Clubs were suffering financially and the standard of the countrys top-flight was considered inferior to Italy and Spains. The advent of satellite broadcasting, however, meant that there was a growing market for football coverage on television and the nations top twenty-two teams sought to capitalise on the fact. They did this by forming a new league, dubbed the Premier League or Premiership, selling television rights on a collective basis to Sky. One of the twenty-two teams in the new division was Sir Alexs Manchester United, who had the misfortune of conceding the first goal in the new leagues history, which was scored by Brian Deane of Sheffield United. Sir Alexs men didnt start the season particularly well, losing their first two games. A string of wins followed, but a lack of goals was a major problem for the team, who fell to tenth place in the division after another pair of losses in October and November. At the end of the month, everything would change. Leeds United, who had been champions in the previous season, telephoned Manchester United to enquire about the possibility of signing defender Denis Irwin. Sir Alex instructed the club to inform their rivals that he was not for sale, but that he wished to submit a counter enquiry about one of their strikers. A deal was soon made and the new man made his way to Old Trafford. His name was Eric Cantona. The signing likely only took place because striker Dion Dublin had broken his leg at the beginning of the season, but Cantona, or The King, as supporters would refer to him, would be the centrepiece of the United lineup. With nine goals, he made an effective contribution to the second half of the teams season, which culminated in them winning the first Premier League trophy, their first top-flight success since 1967. Sir Alex had brought domestic glory back to Manchester once more.
