Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle: 8 Key Things We Learned

2. Coloccini Was A Colossus

Despite just returning from injury, Newcastle's Argentinian captain was as imperious as usual, almost single-handedly distinguishing the threat posed by Steven Fletcher, and sweeping up balls that came near the defence in the same manner that has made him such a huge influence in the past couple of years at St. James Park. He is extremely good on the floor - to the extent that he rarely has to win headers - and his positional sense is second to none. Alan Pardew likened him to Bobby Moore yesterday, and there is certainly something in his commitment to the cause and his classiness on the ball that remind of England's former captain. Even more valuably, considering the relative lack of central defensive options until January at the earliest, Coloccini has a positive effect on whoever plays beside him. Steven Taylor always looks more confident next to the Argentinian, and Mike Williamson is a completely different player next to him.
