10 Reasons Doctor Who Is In Serious Trouble

8. Whittaker’s Doctor Still Has Minimal Identity

There were some very revealing moments during the final act of the 12th season finale that said a lot about Whittaker's iteration of The Doctor. In an effort to break free of the Matrix, Whittaker's Doctor begins talking to herself, before stating that this was one of her characteristics.

This was a quite a revelation to many a viewer, who still haven't been handed a fully realised Doctor from Whittaker. Sure, she talks fast, she definitely loves her sonic, but there really isn't much else to identify with. Capaldi wasn't everyones cup of tea as the travelling Timelord, but at least his identity was clear.

The problem with Whittaker's Doctor is that, after two seasons, her character is still very superficial. Okay, she got angry a couple of times, but why then, at that moment, and not others? Is she a weary traveller who is sick and tired of losing companions? Is her fast talking a nervous tick to hide her pain, or something that displays her excitement for a new situation?

The blame here doesn't really fall on Whittaker, who has displayed a range of emotions when asked to. No, the problem is the writing, with Chibnall just unable to create a three dimensional characterisation for his Doctor. Questions as to why the Time Lord chose to take a female form would have definitely helped, but this has been ignored as a plot thread.

Changing the Doctor's gender should have given us a deeper insight into the Time Lord's thoughts and fears, but instead the character is nothing but a caricature.

While he likes to know himself as the 'thunder from down under', Luke is actually just a big dork who loves all things sport, film, James Bond, Doctor Who and Karaoke. With all the suave and sophistication of any Aussie half way through a slab, Luke will critique every minute detail of films and shows from all eras- unless it's 1990's Simpsons episodes, because they're just perfect
