10 Reasons Doctor Who Is In Serious Trouble
4. BBC Budget Cuts Are Starting To Show.
One issue that has been noted by many with the current series, is the show's almost permanent grounding on Earth. While by no means a problem limited to the current series, it is extremely frustrating when a character who can visit anywhere in time and space keeps visiting Sheffield. Hell, she barely leaves the UK these days.
The obvious cause for this problem is a lack of a decent budget, something that is becoming more and more apparent on screen. The fact that the show isn't able to produce episodes on an annual basis is another effect of this, as does the reduced quality of the special effects.
Examples of poor CGI was there to be seen throughout the last series, with heaps of filming in empty rooms and alien landscapes that look remarkably like quarries. The big set pieces were limited in number, and were generally looking quite poor for 2020 standards.
The major criticism of the classic series, and why it was derided by many was because of how cheap it looked. NuWho had managed to smack this head on, delivering spectacular and authentic locations that distanced itself from the corniness of old school Who cinematography. But with the pressure on the BBC's bottom line, and funding model only increasing, the worries that the show will take a backward step aesthetically is a massive concern.
