10 Reasons Doctor Who Is In Serious Trouble
2. The Ratings Are Just Bad
While there will be many a fan who will come to the defence of the show and many a critic equally determined to state just how the bad the show has fallen, there is one figure that just doesn't lie- the ratings. Anyone who tried to claim that there was no interest in a female Time Lord were proven very wrong by the excellent figures the show received for Whittaker's first outings in the TARDIS.
The problem is that the ratings have continued to fall, which is in contrast to the normal fluctuations previous series have endured. A graph of the ratings in the Chibnall/Whittaker era is depressing viewing, with a downhill line that isn't showing any signs of moving in an upwards direction.
The continuous bleeding of viewers is a worry, but the fact that so few are returning for later episodes is perhaps an even greater concern. There may be a lot of televisions still tuned in to watch the Doctor in action, but there are fewer people sitting on the couch to watch it.
While a commercial station would have made some drastic decisions already, the BBC gives off the feeling that they're a little too content, as long as Chibnall follows their mantra. This may be too harsh on the BBC who may just be wishing to give their show runner the creative freedom he needs, but if ever there is a time for urgent action, it's now.
