5. Night Terrors (219, 2011)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNtsT73m9VY One thing Ill give modern Who great credit for: its really excellent at reaching back to childhood fears and exploiting the hell out of them to scare us. The Weeping Angels, for example, work at least in part because when youre a child, you know that statues come to life and move around when people arent looking. This is the same, with a young child being menaced by creepy dolls. Its very atmospheric and claustrophobic and does an excellent job of reaching into our spines and pulling out the scary images from our youth. I also liked the fact that, aside from the last few seconds, it didnt depend on knowing the overall arc from the sixth season. That alone gives us much to recommend for this episode.
