Season 2 of Game of Thrones is understandably overshadowed by Seasons 3 and 4, which are typically seen as the high points of the show. However, the second season still had plenty of commendable material.

In contrast to the first ten episodes, Season 2 was more ambitious. Viewers of the show were treated to previously unseen areas of Westeros and Essos, as well as some terrific new characters. Davos, Melisandre, Brienne, Margaery, and Ygritte were especially welcome additions, and more than made up for the loss of Eddard at the end of Season 1.

The biggest highlight, however, was the Battle of the Blackwater. This was the first time that a single event had been the sole focus of an episode, and the risk more than paid off. Indeed, ‘Blackwater’ is consistently seen as one of the best episodes across all eight seasons.

Consequently, Season 2 deserves more credit than it currently receives. It may not be the pinnacle of the show, but each episode was more than satisfactory.
