It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s Superman! Wait, Supermen!

Ahead of this year’s hugely anticipated Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event for the Arrowverse, it’s been revealed that viewers will be treated to two different versions of Superman. Not only that, but one of those Men of Steel will be Brandon Routh.

Deadline broke the news, with Routh returning to don the famed cape that he wore in 2006’s Superman Returns.

Back then, that Bryan Singer-directed return for the Big Blue Boy Scout split opinion and ultimately didn’t end up being the road to A-list stardom that many had presumed it would be for Routh. Still, the charismatic actor has carved a steady career for himself – not least as Ray Palmer, aka The Atom, in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

The other Superman to be featured, of course, will be Tyler Hoechlin reprising the role he’s played in Supergirl and in last year’s Elseworlds crossover.

It’s yet to be confirmed just how many episodes these two takes on The Last Son of Krypton will both feature in, although each portrayal will be from a different time stamp to the other.

Anticipation is ridiculously high for the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, for the stakes have never been higher for the heroes of the Arrowverse. With the Anti-Monitor getting set to threaten all existence, our heroes will have to come together to somehow stop this all-powerful being.

In the original 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths comic book arc from Marv Wolfman and George Perez, this was a truly major moment in the history of DC Comics as it literally changed the entire landscape of the DC Universe. Amongst those left dead by the end of this story? Why, that’d be both Barry Allen and Kara Zor-El.

Given how Arrow is concluding later this year with a ten-episode eighth and final season, many are predicting that Stephen Amell’s Oliver Queen may end up sacrificing himself to save the Arrowverse and its various potential offshoots of alternative worlds. For now, that remains merely speculation, although it’s most certainly possible.

Crisis on Infinite Earths will air towards the end of the year, with the multiple-show, multi-episode event including the heroes of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
