The Office was already an extremely popular television show in the UK before the US version of it came about. But in comparison to some US remakes which were just disasters such as Fawlty Towers, Steve Carell and the gang totally smashed it. It can be argued that their version of the show was even more popular than the previous UK version starring great names like Ricky Gervais.
After a bit of a rocky start with the first season being criticized as a poor imitation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's work, The American Office really took off and went on to become recognized as one of the funniest and sharpest shows on television. They managed to do what many shows could not by paying high respect to the British original content, yet creating their own identity as a show.
