Once you're in... there ain't no getting out!

Grappling isn't for the faint hearted, and finding yourself fully locked in a choke or variation of bar isn't what many would class as a fun day at the office. So, truly great grapplers will do whatever they can to ensure that they don't end up in a situation where they have no choice but to tap or go to sleep.

That's definitely easier said than done, however.

Some moves and techniques - if executed correctly - can be pretty near impossible to break free from and if a fighter finds themselves fully wrapped up in these specific submissions in the cage, more often than not their night will be over.

It doesn't matter whether it's your leg, arm, neck or face, there's always a manoeuvre out there that - when effectively pulled off - will force said body part into an unbearable position which is near inescapable.

These ten brutal Shoot Wrestling submissions (from a seated position) all come highly recommended by Team Phoenix's own Matthew Teasdale in Newcastle and if you honestly doubt whether they're genuinely almost impossible to escape from... you're more than welcome to ask him for a demonstration.

10. Rear-Naked Choke

This is probably one of the more well known submission holds out there and it's something you may have already attempted on a sibling or pal at one point or another.

Chances are though, you weren't following the 'five steps to heaven' when applying your version of the rear-naked choke on said victim.

Once you've got your opponent's back in a seated position - and nullified one of their arms by trapping it - you then need to slip your arm (right or left - depending on your position) under your rival's neck so that your bicep and forearm are on their carotid artery. Your other arm's elbow then needs to sit on top of their trap and that arm's hand can then either go behind your adversary's head or neck.

Enter the five steps of heaven:

First step - you pull your opponent's neck towards yourself.

Second step - draw your elbows down.

Third step - push their head forward.

Fourth step - pull your shoulders back.

Fifth step - breathe in.

Now, if you want to successfully make your opponent reconsider their career choice, do all five at the same time and get their hands-a-tappin'.
