10 Blatant WWE Cash Grabs

6. The Rock Vs. John Cena (Twice In A Lifetime)

Now for a moment where we were sold something as a blatant lie in order to make us cough up our money just so we didn't miss it.

The event in question involved two of the biggest names to ever step inside a WWE ring clashing for the first time in a bout that was being billed as a 'once in a lifetime' event at WrestleMania XXVIII.

Only the thing is, that was never the plan.

Years later, it's now pretty much general knowledge among WWE fans that The Rock signed up for two WrestleMania matches against John Cena upon his return, so this marketing campaign was audaciously fibbing all along.

It worked, as fans broke WWE's PPV buys record - set by 'Mania 23 - with 1,217,000 purchases and also made the evening the highest grossing event in WWE history with an epic $8,900,000 haul, in the end.

Monstrous numbers were produced thanks in no small part to a monstrous lie and we clearly didn't learn our lesson as we all gushed over the sequel a year later - breaking more records in the process.

It just goes to show that WWE will tell you anything in order to sell an event and when the fans keep coming back for more regardless of their history of lies, you can hardly blame them.
