5 Ups And 7 Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (March 16th)

5. #WM31?

Wm 31 Logo For months, we€™ve heard how WWE had decided to abandon the Roman numeral system of naming WrestleMania. For whatever reason (it€™s confusing, it makes the event feel old, etc.), WWE instead opted to use a symbol to denote the Mania. This decision was made despite the fact that the NFL still uses numerals for the Super Bowl (the main sport comparison to Mania), and despite Roman numeral being woven into the branding, logos and stage sets of the previous 30 WrestleManias. Hence, WrestleMania Play Button was born (with WrestleMania Lone Star coming from Dallas, Texas next year). If Mania came to Philly in 2017, maybe it could be WrestleMania Cheesesteak. Regardless, WWE has gone to great lengths to almost never refer to the March 29 event by a number. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z58MkVDqB_Y But during a commercial with LL Cool J Monday night, WWE revealed the official hashtag for WrestleMania, #WM31. So in the branding and buildup, it€™s taboo to number the event, but we€™re suddenly acknowledging it for Twitter? Either embrace your history or don€™t WWE, but you can€™t have it both ways. Here€™s a helping hand: #WMPlay and #WMSF.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
