7 Ups & 2 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (July 10)

Ups...

7. Come Together

SmackDown Tag Division
WWE.com

A minor thumbs up for SmackDown bringing most of the tag division's major players together last night - not because it was some kind of booking masterstroke, but because the company rarely do such crossover work.

It started on Miz TV. The Bludgeon Brothers and Sanity colluded to attack Team Hell No, drawing The New Day out from the back. An almighty scrap ensued, and the 10-man main event was booked, with the babyfaces facing off against the heelish oppressors.

This is as straightforward as it gets, but makes all kinds of sense. WWE storylines often exist in their own bubble. Wrestlers will interact almost exclusively with their feud partner for long periods of their programme, with the promotion rarely binding two together, particularly in the ring. It's odd, as things like last night's 5-on-5 angle let the company push a couple of stories forward at the same time, which saves airtime as they don't need to give each feud its own dedicated slot.

We don't want to see a world in where every storyline devolves into a multi-person mulch, but this technique works in moderation.
