Ex-WWE Writer Talks "Spirited Debates" With Vince McMahon

The boss had final say, but that didn't mean his staff had to like it...

Former WWE writer Brian Gewirtz revealed on Twitter that he had several "spirited debates" with boss Vince McMahon about cheap heat.

Gewirtz was responding to an old clip of Kevin Owens and Elias bashing Seattle's sports teams.

The writer, who currently works as Senior Vice President of Development for The Rock’s Seven Bucks Productions company, said that he thinks cheap heat can be a "lazy crutch" that pro wrestling (specifically WWE) relies on a little too much.

Then, he agreed that bashing local heroes, sports teams or historical moments can be "a thing of beauty" when done right. Brian, unlike McMahon, likes when localised barbs are delivered in moderation.

Cheap heat is a staple of Vince's repertoire. Much like toilet humour, it has become something fans expect when tuning into WWE programming; it's obviously less-emphasised during the current 'empty arena' era, because WWE are confined to the crowd-less Performance Center in Orlando.

It'd be a shocker if they didn't immediately return to bashing NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL teams as soon as live audiences return and WWE go touring again though.

Even Gewirtz, who butted heads with McMahon in creative meetings about overusing the trope, expects it.
