The Roman Reigns of the early 1990s. The Lex Express was set to lead WWE into a new era, but ultimately fell flat on its face. After debuting as The Narcissist, Luger was portrayed as the American Patriot and the natural successor, seemingly, to Hulk Hogan who had just left for WCW. He was given all the tools to succeed, and then some. How could he fail? Well, he did. Lex just didn't connect with the audience. Simple as. You can't be a WWE Champion without connecting with the people, either positively or negatively. He had one big shot at the big title when he went toe-to-toe with Yokozuna. Something just wasn't right in the eyes of WWE as he was demoted soon after failing to capture the gold, battling the likes of Crush and Ludvig Borga, no less. Luger was then put in The Allied Powers tag team with Davey Boy Smith. Some step down from the main events... The pair battled a load of jobbers before entering a feud with The Million Dollar Corporation. Somewhat of a pointless feud that was going nowhere from the start. Luger then left WWE for WCW without telling Vince McMahon who had let his patriot's contract run down. This could be seen as the ultimate punishment. Well, he could have been sacked, but this is the next worst at least...
