Really, the first seed of AEW was planted when The American Nightmare was granted his release from WWE in May 2016. Dissatisfied with his position in the company, the then-Stardust saw this as an opportunity to bet on himself. In leaving Vince McMahon's sports entertainment giant, he was putting an immense amount of pressure on his back to prove something.
He was a founding father for the company. There is no AEW with no Cody Rhodes.
All eyes now look ahead to whether or not he does indeed return to WWE, with his comeback expected imminently. A WrestleMania 38 or post-'Mania appearance seems the most likely.
Reflecting on his career in the Tony Khan-helmed promotion brings with it such a legendary run. Though his popularity at the end of his tenure had dwindled compared to that of when he started, Rhodes' legacy in the company now lives on through those he helped elevate; Darby Allin, Sammy Guevara, MJF, and numerous others can attest to this.
