As WWE's European tour comes to a closes, superstars and management look rather fatigued by the grind and often get rather physical. There's no other example of that than this past week's edition of Smackdown. London brawling if you will. We begin the night with a very physical no disqualification match between Alberto del Rio and the "Real American" Jack Swagger. The traditional weapons and plunder were used here to great effect. But what really drew me in was the use of submission in the match as ADR attacked the arm and Swagger when after the leg. It gave a nice dynamic to the match and even though it did not end in a submission a great story was told. Swagger wins with the gut wrench powerbomb to make him seem credible in the triple threat World Heavyweight Title match getting wins over the champion and Del Rio in consecutive weeks. But as we know, certain legal entanglements will probably stop a Swagger title run from happening. We go from one extreme to another with hometown girl Layla (you are in London and the only English diva there was billed from Miami?) and Aksana. I have to give these girls credit they even got more physical than usual. It wasn't without silliness. For some reason, Aksana thought it was a good idea to crawl suggestively on the apron in the middle of the match. In the end though, Layla used her new pinning combination called Infinity, which also felt like how long this match lasted. They show the last few minutes of the six a tag from Monday. Then we hear comments from The Shield who say that they will make history tonight and Ambrose will do what 21 other men couldn't do at Wrestlemania and defeat The Undertaker. I love how they always mess with history a little bit gets because it's not like Taker does not lose other matches all the time. Next up, we do the dance with Fandango once again this time with Justin Gabriel. Not a bad match, the announcers seemed way more interested in what to call Summer Rae. In the end it was a short back-and-forth as Fandango got off on the good foot with the return of his top rope leg drop which was impressive considering he changed direction in midair. The London crowd is Fandango crazy. It will be interesting to see how the changes when they go back stateside this week. We see a Raw Rebound and then the history between Mark Henry and Sheamus before the Celtic Warrior goes against The Big Show which you thought may play into the match and it did. Though before Mark Henry's involvement, it was a very physical contest as were used to seeing from these two when they hook it up. The finish saw the World Strongest Man distract Sheamus enough for the KO Punch of Show to be effective. We then head to the battle of England as Wade Barrett quickly dispatches his fellow countrymen William Regal. The match was short but physical as the power of the punch met the force of the Bull Hammer Elbow. Regal was great in getting Barrett over. Too bad that probably won't continue after they leave the UK. Mark Henry battled Randy Orton in a solid contest, which saw Sheamus give some retribution to Henry in the form of a Brogue kick causing a disqualification. Orton got his shot in as well hitting the RKO on the curator of the Hall of Pain. Definitely more tag team encounters in our future for these four. Which isn't a bad thing in my estimation as last week's encounter was pretty good. And while I may have booked some things a little differently. I thought Ambrose showed that he can hold his own in the ring with the Phenom. I would have had Ambrose lose but lose by disqualification. The problem with having him lose by submission in the does nothing but put in the universe minds that he tapped out. This could have been start of really establishing these guys as singles threats as well. I have feeling that this may hurt their aura going forward. While losing to the Deadman is nothing to be ashamed of. It's how you present it that matters. They tried their best to give the shield their heat back following the match with a three on one attack but the fact that they were so single-handedly dismantled up until that spear did not help matters much either. The visual of the spear and the retaining wall is still cool and the triple powerbomb looks effective but how much damage how they really done to the hounds of injustice with their first clean loss in WWE history. All in all, one of the better editions of Smackdown in recent memory. If you like a physical smash mouth style then this is the one for you. I guess JBL is finally right€ They do fight on Friday night.
