10 Greatest Jack Kirby Characters
The Best From the King of Comics.
It's Jack Kirby's 100th birthday this month, and with that in mind it's time to take a look back at some of his all time best creations. Jack Kirby is the greatest creative mind to ever be a part of the comics medium. His imagination for storytelling and design is unparalleled, and his impact is only continuing to grow as time goes on.
Being the creator and co-creator of literally hundreds of different comic book characters for multiple publishers, Kirby's reach goes far beyond almost any artist or writer in entertainment. His career spanned decades and companies, and his legacy has been cemented in history as the proverbial King of Comics. Starting his work back in the 1930s, Kirby shaped some of the most beloved aspects of pop culture today.
When looking at the best Kirby creations, a combination of design and impact on the world of comics has to be considered. Given how many iconic characters the former Marvel and DC alum created, of course not all of them could make it on one list.
But, in the interest of celebrating Jolly Jack's 100th birthday, here are the ten best Jack Kirby characters of all time.
10. Devil Dinosaur
Devil Dinosaur is the best example of the many dinosaurs Kirby eventually drew. Devil Dinosaur existed in a parallel earth where he was set on fire by a group called the Killer-Folk. That fire turned him red and granted him intelligence and super powers, which is a fantastically absurd origin.
Originally, Devil Dinosaur only lasted nine issues before being cancelled by Marvel. He had his own starring title 1978, the last comic for Marvel Kirby would ever work on. As is often the case with Kirby's characters these, Devil Dinosaur is currently experiencing something of a resurgence in popularity, having co-led a title with Moon Girl. Naturally, he made his return to fight Godzilla in a massive brawl.
Devil Dinosaur captures what can make comic books so much fun. Kirby took a design as popular as a Tyrannosaurus, improved on it, and made it friends with a young boy. And come on, who wouldn't want a super powered dinosaur as a friend?
