10 Rare Comic Con Collectibles You Wish You Owned
Pickle Rick Funko POP? Shut up and take my money!
Comic Con has expanded to much more than comics these days, with new movies, TV shows and celebrity panels tending to dominate proceedings much more than paper and ink stories. However, the popularity of collectibles is still as strong as ever.
Plenty of companies have certain merchandise only available within those hallowed conference centre walls... or on eBay soon after.
Invariably, we wish we could own them all, but the article would just be infinitely long if they were all listed. In chopping it down to a top ten, it can be hard to know exactly what another person would value more highly than another person.
Case in point, someone once paid $5,300 for Scarlett Johansson’s used tissue. In fairness, she said she got the cold from Justin Timberlake, so that’s two lots of celebrity germs... yay?
While the appeal of Scarlett Johansson’s snot might not be universal, money is. These collectibles are some of the rarest, most valuable (and in some cases, just most bonkers) items Comic Con has ever produced. Wouldn’t it be great to own them all?
The first five entries cover classic blasts from the past, while the top five will all be available at this year’s SDCC... bring your wallet!
10. Mazinger Z Figurine
Mazinger Z was a super robot hero from Japan, made from the hilariously named Japanium in the translation (the original name is somewhat more creative) and Super Alloy Z. It had a short but moderately successful run of manga comics in the 1970s, spawning TV which ran for two years, also in the 1970s.
Right now, it doesn’t sound like all that much to get excited about. The figurine looks okay, but if you’d never heard of the character, there’s pretty much no chance you’ll wish you owned this one... right?
Well, regardless of whether you’ve heard of it or not, you’ll definitely wish you owed this. Rare even by convention standards, the Mazinger Z figurine only saw 20 ever produced; each selling at $20,000 dollars.
That was a decade ago too, and while with such a limited run none are currently available online to buy, if you were selling one of these you could pretty much name your price now.
It’s not made of Japanium or Super Alloy Z (obviously) but instead a high quality mix of titanium and carbon fibre, standing two feet tall. Is it worth $20,000? Well, people paid it, so there’s your answer.
