Clerks filmmaker's old unrealised adaptation of 70's show The Six Million Dollar Man has been transformed into a comic book and we have the first look!
If Kevin Smith can't get one of his scripts to film, rather than leaving his work dormant on a dusty old shelf, lately he has made sure they get out there in comic book form. Hot on the heels of his comic The Green Hornet that was based on his unrealised film from years back comes the news that his equally failed adaptation of the 70's t.v. show The Six Million Dollar Man is being translated into into the funnybook format. Smith had previously tried to bring the very popular ABC series based on the adventures of Steve Austin (no, not the wrestler) who had mechanical parts that made him a powerful Superhuman to screen but never got the studio backing he needed. Titled 'The Bionic Man' - the comic has been drawn by Jonathan Lau (with covers unmistakeably from Alex Ross) and scribed by Smith and Phil Hester, based on the filmmaker's old screenplay. Bleeding Cool have the preview of the first five pages from issue 1 that hits stands early September; And one advantage this project has for Smith is that unlike The Green Hornet, no other filmmaker has yet brought The Six Million Dollar Man to the big screen. If this comic does well and finds an audience, perhaps, a studio might be interested in giving him the money to run with his version. Though with Smith adamant he will retire after his two part hockey epic Hit Somebody, perhaps that time has passed for the director? Whatever the case with re-imaginings of almost every other 70's t.v. show in development somewhere... including a new take on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - it is surprising there are currently no plans for a movie based on The Six Million Dollar Man!
