New World PicturesEverybodys seen Mean Girls, The Breakfast Club, and Clueless, but theres so much more to the high school film genre than these classics and those like them. Dont get the wrong impression: its hard not to love films about bitchy-with-a-heart-of-gold cheerleaders and brainless jocks with a sensitive side who fall for a girl not in his immediate friendship group (when done right, theyre some of the most enjoyable films you can get). Sadly, high school isn't all shopping montages and transparent metaphors in English class. The popular crowd are just next decades alcoholic divorcees (sorry, not sorry), so where are all the films about the interesting kids? Sure, films like 10 Things I Hate About You, Shes All That, and even Mean Girls may all deal with your stereotypical losers, but the main message is always that those losers want to be in the popular crowd and, if the film is kind to them, thats usually where they end up. Whether the film focuses on the alternative crowds perspective, the darker side of high school bullying, or is just about some kids trying to figure out how to deal with accidentally killing their classmate, all ten in this list demonstrate a refreshing alternative to the Bring It On high school movie clichés.
