Whether it be a spectacularly gruesome kill sequence or the jaw-dropping demise of a beloved central character, this particular subgenre of horror possesses the ability to elicit curses of disbelief like few others. These cinematic moments have left an indelible impression on fright fans worldwide, with the horrors they have witnessed seared onto the retinas of their minds' eyes long after the credits finally roll.

While many of the usual suspects from the storied subgenre make an appearance on this list, many lesser-known offerings have boldly staked their claim for inclusion in the WTF sweepstakes. Pushing the boundaries of horror and trauma to unthinkable new levels, several of these horrific hidden gems have provided some of the most disquieting sequences and unforgettable atrocities in recent memory, courtesy of the brilliantly twisted minds behind the movies' production.

Whether the viewer in question is a battle-hardened slasher aficionado or simply an uninitiated newcomer who thought that My Bloody Valentine was a romantic comedy, the following names all have one thing in common - the ability to elicit three words of macabre disbelief.

What. The. F**k.

10. Fear Street Part 1: 1994 (2021) - Kate's Demise

Based on R.L. Stine's book series of the same name, Netflix's Fear Street trilogy was a rip-roaring success for the streaming giant.

While the franchise may not be an out-and-out slasher in the vein of Scream or Halloween, enough of the iconic subgenre is channelled through the trio of films to merit a spot on this list - particularly when taking the WTF-worthy nature of Kate Schmidt's death in the first instalment into account.

A fiercely loyal and brave friend to the movie's core cast members, the shock factor derived from Kate's death was largely due to her popularity amongst the picture's fanbase. Nobody wants to see their favourite character die in exceedingly harrowing fashion, but that's exactly the direction in which director Leigh Janiak chose to go.

The climactic sequences of Fear Street Part One: 1994 sees our protagonists attempting to fend off the resurrected Shadyside Killers. Despite her best efforts to defend Deena and Sam from their pursuers, Kate bites the dust in such jaw-dropping fashion that she earned Dead Meat's 2022 Golden Chainsaw for Best Kill. After being stabbed by Skull Mask, Schmidt is then pushed headfirst through an industrial bread slicer for one of the most gruesome ends in recent memory.
