10 Hated Movie Characters That Were Written Out After Fan Backlash

Some characters are hated, some are hated so much that they are removed...

It is always a surprise when a series will remove a character for a sequel movie. Sometimes this can be due to a rift between director and actor, or because of scheduling conflicts. It's somewhat to be expected.

Sometimes though, a character will cause so much animosity in fans that when it comes time to create the sequels, writers and directors will simply leave them out entirely, saying they are off elsewhere during the film or killing them offscreen between movies.

This can often be just what a movie series needs to claw back to success and sometimes it can be the last-ditch attempt to save a failing franchise.

Some characters simply don't fit in, or irritate fans, or are just plain dull. There are some that are removed because the general public sees them as offensive. Whatever the reason, the removal of a character from a franchise tends to be due to an idea that were they to remain, they would annoy fans so much that they just wouldn't see the movie.

Whatever the reason, these characters were enough of a problem to fans that studios and directors deemed fit that they should be removed, for the sake of the franchise as a whole.

10. Willie Scott - Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom

Willie Scott, played by Kate Capshaw, was Indiana Jones' love interest in The Temple of Doom.

Following on from the success of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Spielberg made The Temple of Doom, a prequel to Raiders. The film was a prequel at the suggestion of Producer George Lucas, who wanted to make another Indiana Jones without the Nazis being the villain.

Due to this, Indy's first love interest, Marion Ravenwood was replaced by Willie. In the movie, however, she irritated fans almost the entire time she was on screen, mostly because she was far more of a damsel in distress than Marion. While this was intended to make a strong contrast between the two, it made her seem like a whiny and all-round irritating character who spent most of the movie screaming for help.

Following on from Marion Ravenwood, who had been a strong female role in Raiders, often standing up to Indy when he was out of line and fighting for herself, Willie Scott was a weak character who did nothing positive to the series, only irritating fans.

When The Last Crusade came out, Scott was gone, partly because of the time setting and while she was mentioned in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, thankfully she didn't make an appearance.
