When the end of this year chimes and we all try and drink away the whispering pain of our inevitable future deaths, someone will probably look back on 2019 and reflect on it as the year Disney took over everything as well as the one that brought individual, staggering highs from all over the spectrum like Avengers: Endgame, Booksmart, Eighth Grade and Toy Story 4.

At the same time, though, for them to count 2019 as an overall success, lots is going to have to change in the second half of the year. Because so far, there have been some serious misfires that should have been WAY better than what we actually got and the picture right now is of a year of blockbusters that has seen way too many disappointments...

A stripped-down, scarier take on Hellboy that stuck closer to the comics and cost an awful lot less than the potential Hellboy 3 alternative offered up by Guillermo Del Toro for so long. The cast - particularly David Habour - looked great and Hellboy himself looked the absolute business.

Look, the first trailer re-arranged expectations somewhat, because it wasn't very good at all, but there was still major excitement in the Hellboy-loving community that this could be the opportunity Big Red needed to be a relevant movie character again. Unfortunately, it failed.

The script is poor, the characters pretty roundly awful and it lacks any kind of substance. And there's even a problem with the film's sense of wonder and imagination, which is a killer, but which isn't as fatal as the lack of emotional depth or pathos that made the comics so popular.
