10 Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Were Coming In 2020

Sequel mania is showing no signs of dying down.

Hollywood is always looking ahead to the future, lining films up for the years to come, and this is unavoidable considering how long it takes to put a blockbuster movie together. In-demand actors and directors' schedules become packed up, special effects can take a while to perfect, and scenes must be shot countless times over.

As a result, the cinematic release schedule is rapidly filling up, not just for next year, but 2020 too, as studios scramble to reserve prime slots for their projects. Although most of these films are announced well in advance, it's easy to forget when they're landing in theatres due to the sheer volume of movies that are churned out.

Some of the biggest film franchises on the planet have new instalments slated for release the year after next, but most punters have forgotten these movies are on the distant horizon, since the initial announcement hype has died down.

Other sequels that were previously confirmed for 2020 were unveiled with little fanfare, their studio slipping them quietly under the radar, no doubt saving the hype campaign for a time when trailers and promotional materials exist.

10. GI Joe 3

A Hasbro cinematic universe might sound like the most unnecessary thing since the sequel to Donnie Darko, but the world is getting one nevertheless, and 2020's GI Joe movie could become its centrepiece.

Paramount Studios announced a slew of films based on the toy company's biggest properties late last year, revealing little about them beyond titles and release dates, and its third attempt at a GI Joe film is no less shrouded in mystery.

It's unclear whether the project will follow on from the events of 2009's Rise of the Cobra and 2013's Retaliation, or wipe the slate clean and reboot the property.

Paramount has also announced a Micronauts movie for release in the same year, and given that the two franchises have crossed over in other mediums before, there's a good chance post-credits scenes and setups will tie them together.

D.J. Caruso was previously attached to direct GI Joe 3 and he spoke at length of his plans to cross the series over with Transformers, but since he has long since bowed out of the film, it's unclear whether this is still the plan.
