Sometimes an opening scene has the power to grip you to the point where the rest of the movie just has to be awesome, right? Wrong. There are some movies that started off incredibly well, only to become boring, linear or mediocre thereafter - some of which we collectively seem to ignore because we're afraid to insult a popular film. It's easy to understand how this can happen. The opening scene - especially in large blockbuster movies - is designed to draw the audience in, getting their attention with a combination of stunning visuals, intriguing plot points while setting the movie up for the remainder of its duration. Unfortunately, it sometimes seems as if, rather than saving the best for last, the filmmakers use up their best ideas too soon, and inevitably the rest of the film begins to run out of steam. The following are popular films - some of them undoubtedly great ones - which are all guilty of failing to capitalize on their opening moments; movies which start with a bang and never quite succeed in recapturing that glory. And while we might not like to admit it, some of them wind up ending on a whimper, leaving the audience with an aftertaste of disappointment they'd probably rather not acknowledge.
