More so than all this, though, The Martian is a major return to form for Scott, whose recent output has been wildly inconsistent to say the least. With his last film that you could even argue to be great being 2000's Gladiator, and a ton of disappointing dreck following in its wake, this big-budget, lavish sci-fi adventure is just the sort of tonic his fans, who were no doubt fast losing their faith in the 77-year-old director, have long been in need of. Everyone loves an epic comeback story, and now it's time for Sir Ridley to hopefully mount a successful return to absorbing sci-fi cinema, what with production on Alien: Paradise Lost to follow soon, potentially along with other Prometheus sequels.
