10. Revenge

Neon

A deliciously brutal and subversive spin on the tired rape-revenge film, Revenge begins as a seemingly conventional, salacious entry into the genre, before pulling out the rug and having its beautiful heroine (Matilda Lutz) turn the tables on her attackers.

One of the year's most startling and creative directorial debuts regardless of genre, Coralie Fargeat's film is gorgeously shot, unrelentingly grisly and unexpectedly surreal, with a star-making performance from Lutz in the bargain.

Whether you're a fan of the sub-genre or not, this is quite arguably its best entry ever, with a chest-thumping feminist bent that never gets in the way of the ludicrously entertaining blood-letting.
