There is a tendency in action movies to do things bigger, better and louder than previous movies - more car chases, more complicated shoot-outs and more explosions tends to be the order of the day in a whirlwind of pyrotechical one-upmanship that sees filmmakers constantly attempting to outdo one another. There's certainly something to be said for an elaborately staged action sequence and when done well it's about as visceral a cinematic experience as you can get. From the early gangster movies of the 1930s through to the gloriously choreographed shoot outs of John Woo's Hong Kong action movies (arguably the pinnacle of the genre), action - and more specifically violent gunplay - has enthralled audiences around the world. Still, as much fun as it is watching scenes of gunplay in action movies, sometimes it's entertaining to see an action hero using something a little more imaginative than a gun. It's perhaps even more fun when that improvised weapon of choice is something completely unexpected or even something so mundane and stupid that it's the last thing a person would think of using to take out an enemy.
