10 Terrifying Children's Movies You Used To Watch on Repeat

By Kevan Roche /

As a kid I watched movies all the time (still do). However, back in the early 90s you couldn€™t just go online and stream a movie on your parents€™ Netflix account. Getting ahold of new movies wasn€™t such an easy task for someone who didn€™t get an allowance. Back then even pirating films was a hassle: you€™d have to wait until a movie played on TV and then get your dad to record it on a VHS tape, pausing the recording everytime it went to commercial. Because that was a total chore, and because kids couldn€™t just go out and rent movies anytime they wanted -- at least not where I grew up -- I mostly had to stick to re-watching the films already in my VHS collection. This meant that there were a good number of movies that I watched practically on repeat; up until the magnetic tape wore out and made them literally unplayable. It€™s October and everyone else on the internet is gearing up for Halloween, so not wanting to feel left out I decided to put together a list of 10 great children's films from the 80s and 90s that you watched over and over, even though they gave you nightmares. First I should clarify one thing: when I say €œyou,€ what I really mean to say is €œI.€ While making this list I realized that some of the films on here are pretty obscure and probably didn€™t play in every kid€™s home. But what would be the fun in reading a totally predictable list anyway? If I can convince anyone to see one of these films that they missed out on as a kid, or to show to their own kids, I€™ll consider myself a successful advocate of the medium. If you have seen all these movies then you clearly had a pretty cinematically rich childhood as well: high five. So here€™s my list of 10 awesome children€™s films of the 80s and 90s that I repeatedly allowed to scare the sh*t out of me.
