It's a classic fantasy to want real life to be more like fiction, and why not? Real life is dull, and we've all got imaginations to keep us occupied. If you told me you'd never fantasised about living in a world where human flight is possible, super-strength is a reality and people can swan about with myriad superpowers, I'd tell you you're a liar. To dream is human, and occasionally, we'd really like life to emulate fiction. So with this in mind, let's look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's dominating the popular zeitgeist at the moment, and it seems like a pretty cool place, full of awesome stuff involving gods, monsters, derring-do and no small amount of explosions. Taken from afar, it's totally awesome. Life would be like an action movie, and a big budget action movie at that. It's a perfectly legitimate escapist fantasy, a place where life is suddenly far more exciting. Well, I'm here to tell you that though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is awesome, it's probably hell on Earth to live in. The fact of the matter is that in this universe, you're going to still be the same person, except now life is wildly more dangerous and un-fulfilling. You could be killed going out to get the milk, and your life would seem all the more mundane because of these superheroes. The very existence of superheroes and all that comes with them means you're more likely to become depressed, and not only will it suck for the individual, it's going to suck for society too. How so? Read on and find out. Disclaimer: This article is primarily concerned with the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise the Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. However, the majority of these points could count for the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Spider-Man universes and probably the DC universe too. Needless to say, there's a SPOILER WARNING in effect.
