10 Worst Movie Characters Of 2021 (So Far)

Can you believe the year is half over? 2021 may still have six months to go, but the first half has already served up a wealth of great movies and spectacular, unforgettable characters.
But let's be real - it's also given us a glut of trash, both in cinemas and especially at home, defined by spectacularly stupid screenplays and actors who just couldn't care any less.
A bad character can be defined any number of ways - perhaps they're aggressively stupid, utterly pointless within the scope of the story, or just simply irritating to watch for two hours.
These 10 characters not only wasted most of the actors who played them, but actively dragged down movies that mostly didn't need any extra help wearing viewers' patience down to the nub.
If you're a writer and want a textbook example of how not to write a character, just take a look at these 10 supremely obnoxious, annoying, idiotic, and otherwise atrocious excuses for cinematic human beings.
There's still six more months left for these non-starter characters to get knocked out of the running, but for now they're the absolutely worst that cinema has had to offer this year...
10. Bernie Hayes - Godzilla Vs. Kong
Brian Tyree Henry is a great actor, but he's among several Godzilla vs. Kong actors playing human characters who really didn't need to be in the movie at all.
Henry plays Bernie Hayes, a former Apex Cybernetics technician who has since become a conspiracy theorist obsessed with exposing the company's experiments and uncovering the existence of the "Titans."
Because this isn't enough, Bernie also showers with bleach in an effort to "disable tracking technology" and of course hosts his own Titan-hunting podcast.
A depressing amount of the movie's time is devoted to Bernie teaming up with Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) and Josh (Julian Dennison) as they investigate Godzilla's rampage and eventually stumble across Mechagodzilla.
The fact that Bernie is a cringe-worthy stereotype of a conspiracy theorist isn't bad enough, because he ends up being proven completely right by film's end, which in an era where conspiracy theorists are arguably more harmful than ever makes for some pretty awful optics.
Bernie wasn't a charming, off-kilter loon: he was actively annoying and his mere presence added needless minutes onto the runtime of a film already overwhelmed with pointless characters.
