20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Truman Show

Attention to detail doesn't even begin to describe it.

By Jack Pooley /

It goes without saying that The Truman Show is one of the most eerily prescient movies ever made, predicting the reality TV boom of the late '90s around a year before it fully took hold, and confirming just how much people love fixating on the mundane details of other people's lives.

Directed to enormous critical and commercial success by the great Peter Weir, The Truman Show is also one of the most detail-dense films produced over the last two decades, absolutely jam-packed with mind-blowing details sure to make repeat viewings an absolute hoot.

Weir's frankly obsessive attention-to-detail has allowed The Truman Show to continue peeling back layers so many years after its release, with these Easter eggs, gags, and references just subtle enough that you probably missed them.

From minor pieces of visual world-building to subtle character development, and everything in-between, these 20 tidbits flesh out the world of the movie in ways both surprising, hilarious, and insanely informative.

Needless to say, watching the movie won't ever be quite the same again with all this knowledge in mind...

For one, with his whole life taking place inside a studio-controlled dome with no natural lighting, Truman would suffer from a massive vitamin D deficiency.

In the long term this would cause weak bones, depression, weight gain, cognitive issues, and significantly boost his susceptibility to cancer and high blood pressure.

But the film actually has a sneaky answer for this, as during breakfast Truman has a bottle of vitamin D supplements next to his cup of morning coffee, confirming how the producers keep Truman in tip-top shape despite the obvious risks associated with receiving no sunlight.
