Morbius certainly lived down to expectations.

2022 has been a quality year for cinema so far - whether on the big screen or small screen - but sadly not everything can be a Top Gun: Maverick or Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Not everything can even be basically decent, either, as evidenced by some of the cinematic dreck audiences have had to contend with during the first half of the year.

From remakes nobody asked for, to low-effort sequels, wretched attempts to revive dying genres, and a certain meme-worthy superhero movie, these are the 20 worst films to be released in cinemas or on streaming - looking at you, Netflix, who appear a lot on this list - in 2022 so far.

Obviously there's still the second half of the year to come, yet some of these movies are terrible enough that they surely can't be unseated by whatever's being served up in 2022's remaining months.

But for now, whether so-bad-it's-good or just genuinely horrible, these are the 20 worst films of the year - the duds we all saw coming, the brutal disappointments, and every awful movie in-between...

20. Firestarter

Let's face it - few among us were asking for another adaptation of Stephen King's Firestarter, and this low-effort, low-energy take didn't exactly change many people's minds.

Despite solid performances from Zac Efron and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Firestarter 2022 can't ever decide what type of film it wants to be, in turn failing to satisfy as either a heightened family drama or quasi-superhero movie.

While better paced than the 1984 Drew Barrymore-starring film, it suffers massively with its lacklustre villains and shockingly cheap finale.

After two dud adaptations of King's novel, surely the lesson here is that some things just weren't meant to be translated from page to screen.
