28 Weeks Later Director Rebooting THE CROW

By Matt Holmes /

Breaking news from Variety - the Spanish film director behind the excellent 28 Weeks Later, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, has just landed the gig of rebooting The Crow franchise at Relativity Media. The producers of the original 1994 adaptation of James O'Barr's comic book series are on board and are hoping for "a compelling and innovative re-imagining of The Crow", which will once again find cult hero Eric Draven brought back from the death by a Crow to avenge his wife's murder, so he can reunite with her in the afterlife. Production will begin this fall, once Fresnadillo and an undetermined writer have ironed out a script. I'm a big fan of the original movie (not so much the three sequels or that t.v. series I've long forgotten) and of course the incomparable performance by Brandon Lee. Also I have to say Fresnadillo's 28 Weeks Later is a fine, fine movie (better than 28 Days Later for me), so I can't help but be intrigued. Since his time on 28 Weeks Later, Fresnadillo has directed the Clive Owen thriller Intruders that opens in October. OWF's Ben Szwediuk emailed me about 30 mins ago expressing his anger over the idea of a remake of The Crow... so expect him to chime in with a bigger article tomorrow.
