5 Movies That Deserve The Criterion Treatment

For those that aren't familiar with it, the Criterion Collection exists to take movies that are important or innovative and give them the top-shelf treatment they deserve. Although they are most associated with releasing foreign films in the west, their selections run the gamut. They include samurai films, American westerns, adaptations of Kabuki theater, a nine-hour documentary about the Holocaust and, rather inexplicably, Armageddon. All of their releases receive the best treatment of any films out there. Features include the best restorations, hours of commentaries, interviews and photo galleries. To top it all off, most movies include a booklet containing essays from film critics and historians. Since many of the films Criterion release would otherwise be unlikely to see the light of day ever again, all of these goodies are just icing on the cake - a whole lot of icing. Basically, it's a true film buff's wet dream. And I'm sure we can all think of a few films we'd like to see get that treatment. Here are five of my picks for your reading pleasure...
