5 Oscars 2016 Nominations They Got Right (And 5 They Got Wrong)
The Joy and Sadness of this year's nominations.
Ah, it's that time of year again. Awards season, when the stars put on their gladrags, support their films, get drunk at the Golden Globes, win or lose some awards, and walk a red carpet to get asked who they're wearing. The end goal of all this, the holy grail of this period, is of course the Oscars. It may be a self-congratulatory jamboree that only honours a certain type of film, but nonetheless it honours very good films, highlighting those that are feats of writing, direction, acting, and various technical areas, even if it does generally ignore more commercially successful and genre films. It's good fun, despite the obvious problems, and with the announcement of the nominations comes a chance to pore over them and see where they absolutely nailed it, and where they got it horribly wrong. The Revenant leads the pack with 12 nominations, and it's such a consensus critical favourite that no one is batting an eyelid at those picks, which is why you won't find them mentioned further into this list (but yeah, this is Leo's year!). Elsewhere, there was room for a big summer blockbuster to find a lot of Academy love, some pleasantly surprising inclusions, and a few rather glaring omissions.
