Uncle Buck, played by the irrevocable John Candy, is a man all of us know and love. With his quick wit, snappy one liners and ability to win over moody teenagers, Buck showed kids of the 80s how cool an uncle could be. Three lucky children, namely Tia, Miles and Maizy find themselves in the care of their old Uncle Buck when their parents are suddenly called to the sick bed of their grandfather. Not knowing how lucky they are, they approach the events with scepticism, particularly teenager Tia, who begins making up stories to her mother about what a bad baby sitter her uncle is. She soon learns however, as we all do, that Buck is a pretty cool cookie, and one who given the chance, most of us would love to have as an uncle looking after us at one time or another, and here are the reasons why.
5. You Get Giant Pancakes Every Birthday
Who wouldn't love this? Unless you don't like pancakes, which is not Buck's fault. A scene that warms the hearts and stomachs of many children from this film are the enormous pancakes that Buck makes for Miles' birthday, with a scientific diameter of 'wow these are huge'! Cost seems irrelevant, and the amount of cows and chickens that were bred simply to provide enough ingredients to make one of these monsters does not even bear thinking about. A shovel of snow ploughing proportions is used to flip the pancakes, much to Miles' delight, leaving many tummies rumbling after the scene was over. Couple this with the size of the pot containing the pancake batter and you one very happy, and full, birthday boy! Unless you're a girl. One thing that makes this breakfast even better, and yes amazingly it can get better, is the news that this is only half of it, with Buck explaining that he could not fit the toast through the door.
