A New Nightmare for Freddy!

The saga of Freddy Krueger's next nightmare continues over at New Line.

The situation seems to be this. The studio have seen the financial success in the returns of the 'real' big horror franchises like DAWN OF THE DEAD ($69 million domestic), HALLOWEEN ($58 million domestic) and the inevitable big money that FRIDAY THE 13TH will make next February. They know that Freddy's last outing against Jason made them huge cash but also kinda killed the character also, leaving him with little room for future adventures... unless they hit the remake switch. So it's a simple formula, Freddy = cash. But they need to figure out the best way to bring him back. Teaming him against Jason again or even Ash from THE EVIL DEAD would make instant money but doesn't leave as much room as a sequel/remake/restart or whatever. Here's the official word on the future of Freddy Krueger from an unofficial source that spoke to Bloody Disgusting...
Our anonymous source tells us that as of right now, today, this very moment there are NO immediate plans for Freddy vs Jason 2. Bummer. But there is some good news! We've been informed that New Line is actively developing another Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Everything you've heard before has been scrapped (prequel) and they're back at square one. Ideas are being thrown around without anything solid locked down.
Obviously, it would be awesome if Wes Craven were able to find his creative juices again and return to give us a defining horror movie to wake us from this current glut the genre is in but that doesn't look likely to happen at this point. I've always thought the original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET had one of the creepiest and terrifying plots the genre has ever seen, and in this dark and paranoid world we live in with our children's safety... I think it wouldn't feel anywhere near as dated as the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake might next year. I say just make a new movie but don't call it a sequel or restart. Just give it a cool title, and give us a less tongue-in-cheek and more despicable Freddy than we have ever seen before. Give us a real scary movie. God knows we need it.
