Adventure Time Movie In The Works

From creator Pendleton Ward and Lego Movie's Chris McKay.

Adventure Time is rather more expansive and, by now, somewhat more of a commitment than I'd first expected. Just watching a handful of early episodes, I enjoyed them all on their own terms but slowly, surely, a sense of a bigger picture started to form. And the program makers know it works like this. They're playing more and more towards arcs of connected episodes, with backstory and long-play character development being drip fed to us carefully. There's even a special "event series" coming that will tell a single story across multiple episodes, able at last to disregard the need for discrete episode storylines. So how a feature film is going to fit into the overall scheme is anybody's guess. I wouldn't have even thought a feature would be a concern, but it is. According to Deadline, the film is in development now with Pendleton Ward, the show's creator, involved as a writer and producer, and with The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie and Robot Chicken's Chris McKay seemingly in charge of the project. Somehow they'll find an easy access point for newbies, I'm sure. Perhaps they could use this movie to finally explain the nature of the Mushroom War, the still rather mysterious apocalypse that throws long shadows of The Kingdom of Oo. Or, you know, maybe the idea of a nuclear event devastating planet Earth will be a bit bleak for a family film. We'll have something of a wait until The Adventure Time Movie, or whatever they call it, but we'll do our best to keep you posted.
